How to fuel a workout

My friends often wonder how I manage to do a 9-5 job and then go to the gym straight after. I’ve struggled with tiredness and stress in the past but since I started doing regular exercise a few years ago, I’ve seen a massive difference in my energy levels and overall wellbeing. Of course, I still need something give me a little boost before a tough session and this post is going to talk you through my routine before and after a workout.

ETB Fit got in touch with me last week and were interested in finding out what fuels my workouts. They sent across some questions for me to answer to get a better understanding of how I stay motivated and keep my body in tip-top condition ready for the next workout. ETB Fit is a nutrition based lifestyle business who provide supplements for fitness minded individuals to competing athletes.

DISCLAIMER: Obviously I’m not a fitness specialist or anything of the sort, so what works for me might not necessarily work for you. Each person is different, this is just an insight of how I fuel up before a workout.

What foods do you eat pre workout?

Around 30 minutes before my workout, I eat a banana and take a thermopure capsule which I buy from MyProtein. The banana gives me a natural sugar rush and perks me up whilst the thermopure capsules contains various vitamins that help to reduce tiredness which seem to work quite well for me.

What music do you listen to during your workout?

The music I listen to during a workout depends on my mood but usually it’s something upbeat and fast paced that will help me power through and get things done. My playlist includes anything from Beyonce to Linkin Park.

How do you switch up certain routines daily/weekly to stay motivated?

I like to structure my weeks and rotate around my body so I don’t tire myself out. Monday is for legs, Wednesday is for arms, Friday is cardio and Saturday is a combination of abs and HIIT. I also walk, swim and run occasionally too. I love turning my workouts into mini circuit sessions where I whizz through and move on to the next one, it’s fun and makes the workout pass a lot quicker.

What do you eat or do after your workout to make sure you got the most out of your workout?

After a workout I like to cool down by doing some basic stretches. If I’ve had a heavy weight session, I have a protein shake to help grow and maintain my muscles as well as helping my muscles to recover. I’m currently using the Impact Whey Protein in Strawberry Jam Roly Poly from MyProtein.
