Food | Canteen and Cocktails, Norton
Last week me and some friends headed to Norton to sample some cocktails and indulge in some barbecue themed food at Canteen and Cocktails. Norton is quickly becoming the new Yarm meaning it has some quirky eateries, posh cocktail bars and a canny little night life.
For a Thursday evening, it was fairly quiet but there was still an inviting atmosphere. It wasn’t until later that the bar started to fill up and people were chattering amongst their small groups. With long wooden tables for a communal vibe and exposed filament light bulbs, the decor was a combination of school canteen traits and industrial quirks.
With the word cocktail in the name, it would be rude not to sample some of their classic cocktails. I began the evening with their signature cocktail which was delicious. Priced at £6, it was a blend of mixed berry vodka, strawberry liqueur, cranberry juice and mint. I then tried the Amaretto Sour whilst my friends indulged in Mojitos, frozen Daiquiris and Margaritas. I was impressed by the size of the cocktails as some places are quite shady with their portions!
Moving on to the food, I ordered the chicken, cheese and chorizo bap with a side of sweet potato fries. I’ll be honest, the bap wasn’t what I was expecting. Burgers/baps are a struggle to eat at the best of times but this one was spilling out of the side and had more lettuce and chilli slaw than it did chicken and chorizo which was a little disappointing. Nevertheless, the bap was still very tasty and the sweet potato fries were delicious too.
Overall I had a lovely evening at Canteen and Cocktails; the staff were really friendly, the drinks were great and the food was good too. I’ll be going back this weekend to sample some more cocktails and try the rest of the menu!
