Halloween | Gruesome Graveyard Trifle
With Halloween, Bonfire Night, my birthday and Christmas all within weeks of one another, autumn/winter has always been my favourite time of the year. First up we have Halloween which I love getting dressed up for and experimenting with new goulish recipes. Today I’ve got a cool Halloween recipe to share with you all. If you’re looking to create a bake-off worthy showstopper an upcoming Halloween party, look no further!
I’ve been invited to a Halloween party this year so I thought it was the perfect excuse to put something together to take with me. Whilst I was browsing the Tesco magazine I came across this really cool graveyard trifle which was complete with soil, worms and gravestones – how grim?! I decided to give it a go but make a few tweaks to it. Here’s what I used and how I did it when I did a test run for it:
Ingredients:
- 1x 425g box of brownies bites
- 1x 500g tin of custard
- 1/2 a bottle of green food colouring
- 1x 135g pack of orange jelly
- 1x full pack of chocolate cream Oreos
- 3x cornflake bites
- 3x rich tea fingers
- 1x 125g of sour gummy snakes/worms
- 1 tube of white chocolate icing
Method:
- First of all I crumbled my brownie bites into a plastic bowl and flattened them down to make a base. I placed a few gummy worms on top of the base, pressing a few close to the sides of the bowl so they are visible.
- Next I added my cubes of jelly to a jug of boiling water and stirred until dissolved. I then set the jug aside to cool down for around 30 minutes.
- I poured a full tin of custard into a separate bowl and gradually added the green food colouring until the custard was a bright green shade (Tesco used orange but I thought green would look more gruesome). I then poured the custard over the brownie layer.
- Whilst I waited for the jelly to cool, I used a food processor to turn my Oreos into fine crumbs.
- Going back to the jelly, I spooned a small layer over the custard and let it set in the fridge for around an hour. I then poured the remaining jelly mixture over the top and set in the fridge overnight (however the jelly should take around 4 hours to set).
- Once my jelly had set, I sprinkled my Oreo crumb mixture on top to look like soil.
- To decorate, I wrote on some rich tea biscuits using some white chocolate icing and carefully stood them up in the trifle. I then placed the cornflake pieces in front of the biscuit gravestones and added some more worms.
I must admit, I wasn’t a fan of the taste of the trifle; there was just too much going on! However, I think it would definitely make a good centrepiece at a Halloween party.
