Launch of Songbird Bakery | Bedford Street, Middlesbrough
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been following the development of Bedford Street in Middlesbrough town centre for some time now. Today another one of the highly-anticipated independent foodie businesses open their doors to the public – The Songbird Bakery. Yesterday I was kindly invited along for a sneak-peek at the new cafe ahead of the official opening today to sample some of the bakeries delicious signature cupcakes and to coo over their beautiful new set up.
Upon arrival we were greeted with some fruity drinks in champagne flutes garnished with fresh raspberries. Whilst we waited for the others to arrive, I explored the freshly-decorated shop and took some photos. From the moment you step inside 7 Bedford Street, you can see it’s the sort of place you can picture yourself sitting with your friends for a casual catch up over cake and a drink.
Since hearing about the Bedford Street development, I’ve been so excited about the entire process. Neighbours of the Songbird Bakery include The Chairman, The Nuthatch and The Curing Restaurant. (You can read my review on the Chairman here).
The Songbird Bakery has a lovely fresh feel to it. Following a crisp and classy colour scheme of duck egg blue and white, the bakery features a cosy window seat, a brick wall feature and a beautiful counter to showcase their freshly baked cupcakes. The furniture throughout the shop has been restored and repainted by a local lady.
Since getting the keys to their new home at the beginning of February this year, business partners Claire and Shelley have been working full steam ahead in an attempt to open their doors and make their dream a reality sooner rather than later. Having to do everything themselves from the plumbing to dealing with a leak in the ceiling, Claire and Shelley have managed to transform their little shop with the generous help of their friends and family in just 3 months.
From working together in Hobby Craft, the now-owners of Songbird Bakery could only have dreamed of having opening their own bakery in the heart of Middlesbrough town centre where they were both born and bred.
As for the cakes, they are beautiful! Each cupcake is baked to perfection and iced and decorated with care and precision. The frosting is always my favourite part of a cake and the frosting at Songbird Bakery is delicious, I’d even go as far as saying the chocolate one is the best I’ve ever tasted (and I’ve tasted a lot of cake!). I love the hidden surprises in some of the cakes which really adds to the whole experience and helps to send your taste buds into overdrive.
The bakery is everything I expected it to be. Inspired by the likes of Hummingbird Bakery and other boutique cake shops found in large cities, the co-owners of Songbird Bakery wanted to add a classy touch by harvesting design and quality which is demonstrated in their company’s tagline ‘Harmony of flavour and design’.
Cupcakes are available to sit in with or takeaway so you can get your sweet fix on the go. Songbird Bakery also bake cakes for special occasions, feel free contact them with your requests. For a taster of their previous celebration cakes, take a look at the Songbird Bakery Instagram page.
