Events | Orange Pip Market | Baker Street, Middlesbrough
The last Saturday in May marked the first of many Orange Pip Markets which took place along Baker Street in Middlesbrough town centre. The new artisan food market boasts local food businesses, live music and street entertainment. Me and my mam had been looking forward to the event for weeks and luckily we were blessed with glorious sunshine throughout the day.
The market reminded me of the Festival of Thift I went to last year, displaying lots of quirky, self-made costumes and features in every direction. I love anything creative and admire the thought and effort that went into the event. There was a vintage photo booth developing photographs with a sepia effect and a large white horse made from wood and fabric. Comical duo, Jean and Morag, were doing rings around the market on a floral tricycle. They were both very over the top and fun to watch whilst we waited in line to be served at the stalls.
For our lunch we headed to Barbarossa on Bedford Street, you can read more about our visit here. We then strolled a few doors down to Songbird Bakery to grab some cupcakes for our way home and they had completely sold out of cakes! Luckily, we managed to grab a handful of Cookie Monster cupcakes from the market stall as they were the only ones left but they were equally as delicious as the other flavours I’ve tried before.
We also managed to get our hands on some of the popular pies from Pie Jackers. Having sold out at the food festival at Stewarts Park a week earlier, we thought we must be missing out on something. I got a hot shot parmo pie to take home for Ross which went down a treat!
The Orange Pip Market is a great place to visit if you’re looking for independently-made food and drinks that are a little different to your typical supermarket goods. The quality of the products is second to none and the atmosphere of the whole event is just brilliant. The Orange Pip Market was a great success and this is only the beginning, I’m looking forward to future events on Baker Street to see which other food and drink companies decide to hold a stall. I firmly believe in supporting local companies instead of your large chain stores and I feel like the market has given the town centre better access to them.
