Breakfast at The Alchemist | Eldon Square, Newcastle

Bacon sandwich at the alchemist newcastle

The Alchemist, one of my favourite cocktail bars of all time, is one of the newest additions to Newcastle’s Greys Quarter in Eldon Square. The new bar has understandably received a warm welcome since its opening earlier this year offering cocktails to replicate the sort of things you would see in a science lab and low lighting to create rustic ambience. Something you might not know about The Alchemist is that it is also a restaurant, serving up a cracking menu including a delectable breakfast.

The Alchemist Newcastle

One weekend Adam and I travelled up to Newcastle for a spot of shopping and whilst we waited patiently for the shops to open we decided to pop into The Alchemist for a spot of breakfast. Obviously during the morning the bar was a lot quieter than it would be on an evening. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming which is always nice to see. What I love about The Alchemist is that they pay great attention to detail, like the salt and pepper shakers in the shape of Erlenmeyer flasks. Providing complementary bottles of still and sparkling water for our table was a nice touch too.

Scrambled egg with smoked salmon at the alchemist

Scrambled egg and smoked salmon £8.00 (Toast sold separately) | Bacon buttie £5.00

I ordered the ‘proper bacon buttie’ and it completely exceeded all expectations! A generous amount of super crispy streaky bacon nestled beautifully between two butter-soaked slices of thick, white doorstop bread – Amazing! It was a great sized portion and I enjoyed every bite. Adam ordered the scrambled egg and smoked salmon along with a side of toast. He really enjoyed his breakfast however he wished the portion size was a little more generous!

Once we’d finished, the bill was brought over in a cool wallet which was titled ‘The Damage’ which indeed it was quite damaging! I thought my bacon sandwich was reasonably priced however I think Adam’s choice was overpriced for the amount of food he received. Despite being a bit on the pricey side for a breakfast, we both thoroughly enjoyed it and we’d go back in a heartbeat to taste some of that crispy bacon once more!

Is The Alchemist somewhere you would like to try for food? Or would you prefer to stick to the cocktails?
