Meze Lounge Starters - Calamari Squid Rings and Turkish Sausage

I really love trying food from different corners of the world so you bet I was pleased when I heard there was a Turkish restaurant opening up in Middlesbrough. Meze Lounge is a restaurant I’d been meaning to try since it opened back in 2016 and it has continued to receive rave reviews. Unfortunately my first visit to the wasn’t until my birthday last year, and I can’t believe I’d actually left it that long. I went back a couple of weekends ago so Adam could experience the food in all its glory since he missed out the first time around. Sucuk Spicy Turkish Garlic Sausage Meze Lounge

Having visited Turkey on a couple of occasion before, I’ve dabbled in Turkish cuisine and really enjoyed it so it was fun to see how Meze Lounge lived up to the real deal. During my first visit I only ordered a main course so when Adam suggested getting a starter I was looking forward to getting the full Turkish experience. To start, Adam order the calamari (deep fried squid rings) and I got the sucuk (chargrilled spicy Turkish grilled sausage), we were given complementary homemade Turkish bread which was a lovely gesture.

Adam said his calamari was cooked to perfection and he thoroughly enjoyed it, I didn’t try it as I’m not fond of the texture of squid. We shared my Turkish sausage which was full of flavour and very moreish, it set me up perfectly for my main course.

Meze Lounge Middlesbrough - Chicken Parmasan and Iskender Chicken Kebab

I’ve got to admit, during both of my trips to Meze Lounge I’ve ordered the same main course because it was simply delicious! I’ve fallen in love with is their iskender chicken kebab, a dish of chargrilled strips of chicken topped with their special tomato sauce and melted butter served on cubes of pine bread. The bread soaks up the sauce to form a beautiful soggy bread that I just can’t get enough of! The already-generous portion also comes with a dome of rice, yogurt and fresh salad on the side.

I fancied swapping my rice for some chips but I was told I couldn’t so we ordered an additional side of chips instead. This didn’t bother me too much as I had heard previously that Meze Lounge don’t modify their meals, they come as they are intended to be served to ensure you experience each Turkish dish in the most authentic way.

You get plenty of your money at Meze Lounge and you certainly won’t leave feeling unsatisfied. My only regret is that I didn’t visit this place sooner! I’d love to know what your favourite Turkish dishes are so I can give them a try next time.
