How to Negotiate the Best Deal on a Used Vehicle | #AD

Since passing my driving test in 2010, I’ve bought three different cars. After getting to grips with driving on my own and acquiring my first full time job I decided to wave goodbye to my beloved first car, a Ford Fiesta, and treat myself to a brand new Fiat 500 straight from the showroom. Although my Fiat was my pride and joy during the time I had it, when it came to selling it in 2016 in exchange for something a little bigger, I was surprised and disappointed by how much my car had depreciated in value. Despite looking after it and it having an appealing low mileage, I struggled to get even half of what I paid for it just four years earlier. After this I vowed not to buy a brand new car again because it loses value as soon as you drive it out of the showroom.

In order to get more for your money, I would recommend buying a used vehicle as opposed to a brand new one. Second hand vehicles don’t necessarily have to be old cars either, even cars that are 6 to 12 months old are significantly cheaper than what they charge in the showrooms on new vehicles whilst still having many of the perks that accompany a new car such as warranty and annual servicing. The price of a used vehicle can also be negotiated on giving you an even better deal than you first thought.

Before going out to buy a used vehicle, make sure you research the current market prices of similar cars and shop around to gauge a rough price of what you should be paying. By doing this you will be able to get a rough idea of what specification you can get for your money and if the car dealers you go on to visit have your best interests in mind.

A credible car dealer won’t mind if you ask for the car’s history report which will allow you to find out if the car has been involved in any accidents and if any repairs have been carried out. By finding out a car’s history, you can go on to haggle with the dealer and knock some money off the asking price. Another way to get a better deal is to take a mechanic or someone who knows cars along with you and get them to carry out a pre-purchase inspection to check that everything is working as it should be. In the event that something is not quite right, the dealer may offer to fix this before you finalise your purchase or they may give you the vehicle for a lower price than advertised.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find out everything you need to know about the vehicle including tax band, insurance group and any additional extras you are looking for. A good car dealer won’t mind taking extra time and care to ensure your new purchase ticks all of the boxes so you leave feeling reassured with your choice.
