Burgsy’s Burger House – The Second Best Burger in the UK? | York, North Yorkshire

To celebrate the burger in all its glory ahead of National Burger Day on Thursday 23rd August, TripAdvisor announced a list of their top burger restaurants in the UK. Missing out on first place by the skin of their teeth was Burgsy’s Burger House in Whitby. Burgsy’s has been a restaurant on mine and Adam’s restaurant bucket list for a while now and after hearing it was voted the second best burger in the UK by TripAdvisor earlier last week, we knew we had to make it a priority to pay them a visit and see if it lived up to the hype.

It is a British tradition to have fish and chips when you visit a seaside town in the UK, especially when Whitby’s restaurants and takeaways have won multiple awards for their quality of fish and chips. However, on Saturday we decided to have a burger from Burgsy’s instead (albeit we did tuck into a small tray of chips each to tide us over until our 8pm reservation).

Located across the swing bridge down a small cobbled street right by The Dolphin Pub, Burgsy’s is modest in size so it’s wise to book to avoid the disappointment of being turned away. Upon arriving, every table bar one (ours) was full and due to the small size of the restaurant, as it was warm and busy we decided to sit at the empty table outside whilst the weather was nice and the waitress was very accommodating.

Burgsy’s Burger House has a good variety of burgers, with a choice of beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian options to pick from. I’d heard that everything from the restaurant is homemade, including their sauces which I was excited to try. I went for a classic cheese burger called Buffalo Bill burger (£10.00) which was made up of beef, chedder cheese and ketchup. Adam ordered the Blue Jack (£11.00) which was a combination of beef and Stilton cheese with rocket and balsamic reduction.

There’s no denying that the burgers are big and juicy made from proper, quality beef. Is it worthy of the title of second best burger in the UK though? I don’t think so. I would have liked more flavour and despite ordering a rather classic burger, Adam also said his burger was pretty bland too, saying he couldn’t really taste the Stilton. I personally would have preferred skin on fries or proper homemade chips, the fries to me seemed very basic and plain. I also expected a thick, rich sauce when reading that the sauces were homemade however the tomato ketchup resembled the consistency and taste of tomato passata which I didn’t enjoy. I must admit, I would rather have had a Five Guys!
